You should also be careful about the wildlife which may pose a threat in less densely populated areas, hollow in a road surface, and dangerous dogs having no visible means of control or territorial boundaries.

Also, you should either use the headphones in your one ear only or you should use the volume to a low enough level that you still are aware of the ambient noise. This kind of awareness can make a huge difference.
